Abrasive Flow Machining

What Is Abrasive Flow Machining?

Abrasive flow machining (AFM) is a finishing process that removes burrs and unwanted material from a workpiece. The AFM process utilizes an abrasive flow medium – a semi-solid putty or dough-like material that contains abrasives of various grit sizes. AFM is used to finish complex workpieces with areas that are difficult to reach using other finishing methods.

During the AFM process, a hydraulic ram forces the abrasive media through or across the workpiece. As the abrasive media is extruded along the surface or interior of the workpiece, it polishes away burrs, removes unwanted material, improves flow characteristics, and helps form radii. AFM is used for a wide range of applications, including dies, semi-conductor valves and fittings, engine parts, and medical devices to name a few.

Deburring and Finishing Technologies is a Leading Provider of AFM Services

Deburring and Finishing Technologies is a leading provider of AFM services. Our AFM processes deliver high-quality, defect-free parts that meet or exceed our clients’ specifications. Some of our AFM services include:

  • Polishing/deburring – our AFM processes to polish the workpiece while removing burrs and unwanted material
  • Abrasive Flow Machining – AFM provides a higher quality of finish than other machining finishing processes
  • Diesel spray nozzles – AFM can be used to break in newly EDM’ed spray holes or to increase the horsepower of diesel engines
  • EDM “recast” removal – a finishing process that removes the recast layer from molds, dies, and other parts.

In addition to our outstanding AFM services, Deburring and Finishing Technologies provides abrasive media, new and used AFM machines and other AFM solutions to manufacturers across the nation and around the world.
